Towards A New Matariality
2025

Towards A New Materiality is a DIY bioplastic plant pot kit.

Using the components inside the kit, users directly make their own bioplastic and shape it into a unique plant pot.
By going through the process of making and observing the biodegradation, users are invited to focus on the inherent materiality of the object and discover beauty within its gradual transformation.

The project, Towards a New Materiality, challenges unsustainable practices for both people and the environment. When objects lose their ‘ideal’ state - when they crack, decay or show traces of time - we tend to discard them. In doing so, we lose more than objects. We lose stories, memories, and even parts of our culture, normalising overconsumption and deepen environmental harm.

By working with bioplastics - biodegradable materials full of texture - the project offers a different way of thinking about material value.

Instead of seeking perfection, the process of making material encourages users to embrace natural cracks, bubbles, and irregular surfaces as part of the material’s character. Users can observe how the bioplastic pot changes over time, add new layers of paste, or let it slowly return to the earth through biodegradation.
